Revision of Admission Criteria for FSAS for Fellows from Category 2 Actuarial Associations (“C2AA”) and Afternoon Forum on the Development of these Criteria
Admission criteria as Fellow of SAS (“FSAS”) reflects the consensus of the membership. That consensus changes over time, as evident by the path that fellows from Australia, Canada and CAS took before gaining recognition into our Constitution in 1997. The last major review to admission criteria took place a decade ago, focusing on actuaries from continental Europe. With the majority of members currently with FSAS gaining their designation after the last review, it is timely to have another pulse check.
Good actuarial judgement comes with practice. It is believed that strong work experience can help bridge the perceived competency gap between fellowships awarded by Category 1 Actuarial Associations vs that by C2AAs. (Refer to Constitution for definitions.) Close to 40 Voting Members provided their views last year through a quantitative study which helped us discover what kind of work experience members deem strong enough. The study led to development of a scoring system for different work experience profiles along dimensions such as duration, recency, and what tasks were performed. For avoidance of doubt, minimum requirements of knowledge in actuarial theory and practice, 5 years post-qualification experience (“PQE”) with the C2AA, and good standing, remains part of the admission criteria.
The revised admission criteria for C2AA Fellows as FSAS have been approved by Council; and are now reflected in membership application form on SAS’ website. You may refer to the new scoring system here. Hope that this set of transparent and objective admission criteria helps to establish the tone of how SAS wishes to interact with the actuarial community. If you or your friends who are not yet FSAS but have become eligible under these revised criteria, do apply for the FSAS designation now.
