Derivative Applications within an insurer’s ERM framework: The Past, Present and the Future?

Derivatives have long be applied to an Insurers book for multiple reasons. Be it Solvency II Capital optimization, ALM purposes, variable annuity hedging,  or straight forward market risk hedging. The presentation will cover the historical developments seen with large Insurers across the globe, and compare Asia’s practices to those seen in the US and Europe. Also capturing the regulatory changes and their impact on market liquidity, collateral management and internal requirements. Directly leading to what is required in the future to understand seemingly straightforward hedging programs highlighting the actual complexity when applying these so called plain vanilla strategies to a Participating Fund. The presentation will also highlight the Derivative practices here with Singapore Insurers, where the current outstanding Derivative Notional equates to SGD 50 Billion!

About the speaker:

Marco joined Ortec Finance in 2017 as the Managing Director for Asia tasked with overseeing business development & regional expansion. He has over 20 years of investment banking and management experience with multinational firms in both Asia and Europe

Prior to Ortec Finance Marco spent the majority of his career within the investment banking divisions of ABN Amro, BNP Paribas & Credit Suisse. Throughout the 15 years Marco has spent in the Asia Financial markets, he has worked closely with insurance companies and pension funds understanding their Investment & Hedging intricacies. Focusing on structuring viable and suitable investment strategies complementing their existing portfolios driven by regulatory and economic boundary conditions

Marco earned his Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, University of Technology Delft, Netherlands. Marco is also a CFA and CAIA charterholder.
