Dear Members,

We are pleased to share with you a training seminar by Gavin R. Maistry from Munich Re to improve decision making and judgement in insurance risk assessment.

A key component of insurance risk assessment decisions is qualitative judgment, in addition to quantitative analytical modelling. In the training of insurance actuaries/underwriters, great strides have been made on the analytical side (e.g. Math & Stats courses). However, the training of decision making, both intuitive and deliberate, has largely been ignored. The seminar would firstly involve collecting some self-ratings at the start of the workshop; then taking a pre-training work sample test based on insurance risk situations. This would then be followed by analysis of the test questions with the trainer plus training on the rules underlying good underwriting decisions. Finally, a post-training work sample test based on insurance risk situations will be conducted. Participants will be informed on the overall effectiveness of the training programme to improve underwriting decisions. Please note that participation would be totally voluntary and on an anonymous basis (we will not be collecting names or other personal data) and with full confidentiality.
